A far cry from the modest beginnings of Satoshi Nakamoto’s original paper, blockchain technology has truly entered mainstream consciousness. This development has not been unlike that of AI technology — sharing many of the same highs and lows. Matrix has long advocated that the future will be built on the backs of these two emerging giants, and that much time and energy needs to be spent discussing how both might benefit society. This is where Matrix and the Decentralized AI Alliance (DAIA) intersect.

Decentralization Is Important

In the coming years, artificial intelligence will undoubtedly play a key role in the strategy or tactics of various government organizations and enterprises. The era of AI being limited to the laboratory environment is coming to a close. It won’t be long before ordinary people can actively reap the benefits of artificial intelligence systems — be it while driving autonomous cars or using smartphone assistants. However, people will also be passively impacted while, for instance, consuming targeted ads or engaging with tailored news portals.

With such inevitabilities on the horizon, it is crucial for everyone to consider the issues of how people will engage with, guide and control artificial intelligence systems. Matrix has its own ideas, namely using blockchain to build a distributed artificial intelligence system while democratizing the process of training and maintaining AI algorithms. The DAIA also believes that the decentralization of artificial intelligence is important and aims to ensure that the first strong artificial intelligence platform is inherently kind, democratic, obligatory, responsible, transparent, participatory and decentralized.

Artificial intelligence technology cannot develop without three basic elements: data, computing power and algorithms. Computing power, at present, is the basis for many of today’s AI milestones. In fact, according to Matrix Chief AI Scientist, Steve Deng, the biggest monetary expense in current world-class artificial intelligence competitions is spent towards computing power.

The Matrix AI Network aims to tackle this issue by utilizing the vast amounts of computing power generated during the operation of a blockchain to train artificial intelligence algorithms. By integrating blockchain and AI, ordinary people can contribute their computing power alongside mining and verification tasks. In this way, artificial intelligence models built on the blockchain are controlled by the users, ensuring that anyone can participate in the development of artificial intelligence in a transparent and collaborative manner.

Together with the DAIA, Matrix hopes to accelerate the development of distributed and democratized artificial intelligence technology.
